Why Heads Up! Durham?
For 23 years, Linda Lowery was the Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention Coordinator with the Durham District School Board.
On October 16, 2008 her son, Garrett Bell, a 22-year-old Trent University student, suffered a Catastrophic Brain Injury. During her son's 48 days in ICU at St. Michael's Hospital and years of rehabilitation, Linda became determined to one day devote her energy to saving other families from this largely preventable tragedy.

In 2014, Linda and her husband, Ted Dionne, with the support of her son, approached the Brain injury Association of Durham Region (BIAD), to share their vision for 'Heads Up! Durham', a community collaboration, to create awareness of, and prevent, traumatic brain injury. BIAD eagerly came on board.
Traumatic brain injury: A largely preventable tragedy.
Brain injury awareness and prevention: a shared responsibility.
Heads Up! Durham: A community mobilization whose time has come!
